Brex layoff + 1 week

Eight: The largest number of interview rounds required by a company. One company requires that number, which includes the initial recruiter phone call. The others so far require five — seven rounds.

Six: The number of recruiter phone interviews over the past week. One wasn’t a good match and we agreed to disengage. Great company and cool business but the role wouldn’t work for me. The other five were very good matches, at least as far as I can tell at this stage. I told all of them that I wanted to start the interview process. The next step is with them. Fingers crossed.

Six: The number of company recruiter phone interviews scheduled over the next three days.

Four: The number of lunches I had with friends and former Brex teammates.

Three: The number of job-search/employment sites I’ve registered with so far.

One: The number of home remodeling jobs my wife and I decided to keep. We’ve been working with an architect for a kitchen and bath remodel. At long last, the work is slated to begin the first week of February! Huzzah! Ehhhhhhh but we naturally assumed there wouldn’t be a perturbation in my employment status. Now, a cautious (sensible?) approach would be to cancel it and reschedule when I have a new job; that’s assuming the GC would still talk to us. More likely he wouldn’t return our calls because he would be too busy burning our effigies in his backyard. So we’d have to find another GC. Anyway, we’re confident I’ll land somewhere soon. It would be awful to put this on hold after a year of thinking about it and working on it, so home remodeling job here we come.

I’m decided to run this job search in a deliberate manner, but not exclude fun activities. Usually in a situation like this I go berserk and run the search to the exclusion of most other things. Obsessed with finding a job ASAP? Yes indeed. Everything else is tertiary, forget about secondary. But this time around I’m going to ease up on the throttle and spend time smelling the roses. Nothing grand, I just won’t glue my eyes to my screen for 12 hours a day. There are books to read and nature preserves to visit. Also maybe a cat café.
